THE NEGATIVE

Author: Ansel Adams

Although written for photographers, this is an inspiration for colorists and the famous Zone System is a must read. In fact many of the concepts described in the book can easily be adapted not only to motion pictures, but also to digital sources. Excellent for anyone wishing to understand more about film, dynamic range and use of the zone system.

  THE ART OF COLOR:

Author: Johannes Itten

A beautifully illustrated book on color theory for artists. Such books are rare, but even if there were many this would stand out. This is the best book I know for understanding how we interpret and how we can manipulate color and color combinations

Publisher: Wiley, John & Sons, Incorporated

Art of Color

THE ELEMENTS OF COLOR

Author: Johannes Itten

This is an affordable version of the Art of Color, and includes the essential color theories that Itten established. It is missing the carefully printed illustrations of the Art of Color, but is nevertheless a piceless reference work.

Format: Hardcover, 96 pages
Pub. Date: January 1970

Elements of Color
IF IT'S PURPLE SOMEONE'S GONNA DIE

Author: Patti Bellantoni

This is on my must have list. Although the title seems flippant, it is rare to find a book that specifically concentrates on the emotional response to colors in films. The book contains a lot of research, but is fast becoming a truism as directors are influenced by the book rather than the movies or ideas that it refers to.

If Its Purple

Color

This is really more entertainment than theory, but very useful if you love trivia. A history of paint pigments full of entertaining anecdotes and lost knowledge. This book will definitely change the way you see art and artists!

Format: Paperback, 464 pages
